Gum Disease & Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

What to Expect During LANAP® in Springfield, MO

A)  Pocket depth measurement. This is the first step of laser gum surgery and allows us to determine how much loss of attachment has already taken place.

B)  Bacteria removed with laser.
We use a pulsed light laser to remove infected tissue from the pockets and eradicate bacteria that is causing gum disease. The laser only affects infected tissue so healthy tissue, bone, and the tooth root remain intact.

C)  Calculus removed.
Calculus, or tartar, is removed from the surfaces of the teeth using small ultrasonic scalers. The laser helps to break down the calculus for easy removal with the scaling tools.

D)  Second pass of laser.
Dr. Vance will pass the laser over the treatment area a second time to create a clot. The clot helps to produce an ideal healing environment around the treated area and wards off infection.

E)  Tissue compressed against tooth surface.
The gum tissue is compressed against the surfaces of the teeth and no stitches are needed to start the healing process.

F)  Bite adjustment.
You may need to have your bite adjusted to ensure certain teeth are not under more pressure than others.

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease and are exploring treatment options, schedule a consultation with Dr. Vance as soon as possible. Dr. Vance can provide more information about LANAP® and create a treatment plan that will restore your oral health in Marshfield, MO.
